Creating A More Beautiful World: A Century of Progress in the Breeding of Floral and Nursery Plants

چکیده
In an intriguing article titled “Horticulture: the Font for the Baptism of Genetics” by Robert C. Olby (2000) suggests that the establishment of genetics as an experimental science should be credited to the Evolution Committee of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). William Bateson was a member of this committee and he was the stimulus for the adoption of Mendelism as a science and for the acceptance of hybridization as a breeding protocol. Olby mentions that the RHS sponsored international meetings on plant hybridization in 1899, 1902, and 1906. It was at the third meeting that William Bateson named Mendel s science genetics. Olby reminds us that hybridization of Fuchsia was the subject of one of Mendel s portraits. Today the RHS is known for its stewardship of the knowledge and practice of horticulture and in particular of ornamental plants. In contrast, Olby states that most prominent biologists of the time, botanists and zoologists, did not accept Mendelism until the early 1920s.

Changes of edogenous hormone levels during short-day inductive floral initiation and inflorescence differentiation of Chrysanthemum morifolium ‘Jingyun’
Duration of various stages of inflorescence differentiation and hormone levels in apical buds eventually decide the harvest time, flower uniformity and quality of ornamental plants. The progress in inflorescence differentiation process in the chrysanthemum cultivar ‘Jingyun’ can be divided into nine stages. Following short day induction, it took 4d to reach the growing point hypertrophy stage, ...
متن کاملMolecular Cloning and Analysis of Two Flowering Related Genes from Apple (Malus × domestica)
Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) is the fourth fruit in importance and Iran ranks fifth in apple production in the world. Longevity of juvenility in apple extends breeding cycles and makes its breeding a tough job. To alleviate this barrier via genetic engineering, the genes involved in flowering and floral development of apple and their function must be identified and characterized. Most of thes...

Melon is an important crop cultivated in moderate climate regions of the world. One of the most important diseases of this plant is vascular wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis (Fom). Infection of farm by this pathogen can result in huge damage around the world. Development of resistant varieties is the most effective method for disease control. Four races of 0, 1, 2 and 1,2 have be...

The practice and study of medicine in Persia has a long and prolific history. The ancient Iranian medicine was combined by different medical traditions from Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China and Greece for more than 4000 years and merged to form what became the nucleus and foundation of medical practice in the European countries in the 13th century. The Iranian academic centers like Jundishapur ...
